Educational Administration is suitable only to those currently licensed and working for the State of Hawaii or other institutions. This department is charged with professionally qualifying candidates with knowledge to become principals, vice principals, and leaders in other areas of administration.
Graduates may be employed as supervisors for a wide array of positions in elementary and secondary institutions, or in higher education, department and grade-level chair positions. The Educational Administration department is housed in offices of Wist Hall, 1776 University Avenue. The Internet site is: www.coe.hawaii.edu/edea.
Administration graduate programs lead to the MEd in educational administration with areas of specialization in lower (K-12) or higher education, or PhD in education in educational administration. Areas of concentration include:
legal/financial principles
educational leadership and institutional management
organizational and behavior theory
administrative theory, principles, policies and practices
research in educational administration
Somewhat more rigorous than some other graduate programs, the MEd Plan A and Plan B require 36 credits, and include research. Thus students have a chance to become highly qualified administrators in a chosen field, perhaps moving to one they previously had not been employed in, to the benefit of their careers. For the graduate student presently working in a related position, this would lead their to greater professionalism, and/or qualify them for higher responsibility.
Particularly, students develop a greater understanding and ability to make decisions regarding proper policies and procedures, dealing with ethical or legal issues, and renewing institutions through positive leadership.

Applying to this department, as with the others, requires Graduate Division application and documentation, as well as the program's specific admissions criteria and application. As Educational Administration does not lead to initial teaching licensure, it would not be a substitute for degree/certification programs in teaching. Still, those qualified candidates, graduate students, and faculty, come from a diversity of backgrounds including Asia and the Pacific, many public and private organizations, and thus encompass a vast resource of global experience.
